(Thanks to the awesome blender artist and general FX whiz Nion for the tutorial on this, check it out!)
I have a fever, it’s ghastly.
You may recall that I earlier wrote about the fire festival that’s going on up here. Well, I was bored and my internet connection was slow as all hell, so I decided to brave the cold and go watch the locals commit some arson. The end result was that I had no fun and am now burning with fever, so that went well.
Anyway, back to blender. Seeing as yesterday was all about fire, and how now i feel as though i’m on fire, I decided my computer could use some fire too.
This effect is acheived using the particle system, which takes little specular balls like this, :
and applies some node wizardry to get the fire effect.
As far as I can see, the node tree takes the specular highlights on the balls and turns them into the actual flames by blurring them and making them brighter. Then it makes the non specular diffuse shading the glow of the fire. It then blurs the balls to an amount reletive to the speed they are travelling at, giving the flame effect. My understanding of nodes is limited, so for better understanding you might want to view the full tutorial by Nion here, download my blend file from here, or study the node tree that I shall post below.
